Maintenance Engineer – Temp to Perm
Location: Aston, Birmingham
Pay Rate: £22 per hour
Working Hours: 40 hours per week | Sunday – Thursday | 11:00am – 7:30pm
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Maintenance Engineer with a background in food production or food packaging manufacturing to join a busy food manufacturing facility in Aston, Birmingham.
Please note: Experience working within a food production or food packaging manufacturing environment is strongly preferred for this role.
This is a temp-to-perm opportunity offering long-term stability within a growing food manufacturing operation.
This role is a 50/50 split between hands-on engineering and maintenance coordination, making it ideal for an engineer who enjoys both technical work and team leadership responsibilities.
The Role of a Maintenance Engineer
🔧 Technical Maintenance (50%)
You will play a key role in ensuring the production facility operates efficiently by:
- Performing planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance
- Diagnosing and resolving mechanical and electrical faults
- Minimising downtime and restoring production quickly
- Maintaining food production and packaging machinery
- Ensuring compliance with food safety standards, GMP, and HACCP
Management & Coordination (50%)
Alongside hands-on engineering duties, you will also:
- Plan and organise maintenance schedules and factory shutdowns
- Supervise maintenance technicians and external contractors
- Manage spare parts and maintenance inventory
- Support the maintenance budget and cost control
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with health, safety, and food industry regulations
Machinery & Equipment
You will be responsible for maintaining food production and packaging equipment, including:
- Steam systems
- Air compressors
- Production and packaging machinery
- Conveyors and belt systems
- Electric motors and drive systems
Experience maintaining machinery within a food production or food packaging factory environment is highly preferred.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
- Previous experience working in a food production or food packaging facility is strongly preferred
- Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills
- Experience working within GMP and HACCP standards
- Knowledge of steam systems, compressors, conveyors, belts, and motors
- Previous team leadership or supervisory experience advantageous
- Relevant engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent preferred)
- Strong problem-solving and organisational skills
- Comfortable working hands-on with machinery on the production floor
